Position Summary
Highstead, a regional conservation organization, natural area, and arboretum in southwestern Connecticut, seeks an experienced and motivated individual to direct all programs and administrative activities in support of Highstead's conservation, ecological research, and outreach mission. Highstead is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 that employs six staff members at its 100-acre site housing superb facilities, extensive forests, wetlands, open grasslands and unique collections of native trees and shrubs. Major programs at Highstead coordinated by individual staff members include: Regional Conservation , Woodland and Wildlife Ecology , Landscapes and Plant Collections , and Public and Membership Outreach . Highstead is a growing organization that has recently expanded its staff, land base, facilities, endowment and membership.
Responsibilities and Duties
The Director works at the direction of the board and its chair to refine and implement Highstead's long-term vision for advancing its role in the conservation, ecology and interpretation of natural areas and native plants and animals, locally, regionally and nationally. The Director is responsible for administrating Highstead's facilities, personnel, lands, and botanical collections; promoting its ecological research and regional conservation efforts; developing outreach and education programs; producing print and electronic communications; hiring and supervising staff; developing and managing annual budgets; interacting with the membership and board; and designing and implementing the fundraising strategy. The Director also oversees visiting group activities and the undergraduate internship program, and represents Highstead locally, regionally and nationally at meetings, conferences and in the media.
Qualifications
Required - Masters or doctoral degree in an environmental or natural science and at least 6 years experience, including organizational management. Demonstrated leadership experience in administration, budget management, personnel, communications and outreach, and facilities and landscape maintenance. Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills are essential. Ability to interact productively with staff and board members, visitors, neighbors, collaborators, and partnering organizations is critical. A successful candidate must be self-sufficient, detail-oriented, and a strong problem-solver.
Desired - Experience managing a conservation organization, natural area or biological field station; proven ability to facilitate research and outreach programs; background in communications, outreach and fundraising. Knowledge of the New England landscape and its conservation setting is highly desirable.
Summary Purpose of Job
Work at the direction of the board to support Highstead's continued growth and importance in the ecology and conservation of natural areas, while ensuring the smooth and effective operation of its programs.

Administrative Assistant
Position Summary
Highstead, a regional conservation organization, natural area, and arboretum in southwestern Connecticut, seeks a highly skilled, motivated and outgoing individual to provide administrative and clerical support for its operations, programs, and staff activities. Highstead is a non-profit organization founded in 1982 that employs five staff members at its 150-acre site housing superb facilities, extensive forests, wetlands, and grasslands. This is a permanent, part-time position; approximately 20-25 hours/week; flexible schedule. Limited evening and weekend work is required.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean, organized and productive office environment and reception area.
- Greet and direct visitors, answer phones, respond to information requests. Maintain guest register, indoor exhibits, and informational materials. Facilitate visitor understanding of Highstead, its programs and staff projects.
- Perform general office duties. Maintain Accounts Payable/Receivable accounts.
- Process membership applications/renewals; maintain membership database and mailing lists.
- Liaise with staff, vendors and media on development, publication and distribution of Highstead's education and outreach materials. Monitor and update website.
- Anticipate and facilitate program/event and speaker needs.
- Maintain library and archival materials and databases.
- Perform other duties as needed to support staff and program activities.
Requirements
- Professional telephone etiquette, demeanor and appearance.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong computer skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, e-mail, and the Internet. Publishing and website skills desirable. Familiarity with QuickBooks a plus.
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new computer programs.
- Computer Information and Technology experience a plus.
- Strong organizational habits, extremely detail-oriented and quality-focused.
- Must be self-directed, able to multi-task, and be flexible in ever changing environments.
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends.
- Interest in native plants, woodlands, and conservation a plus.
